A Nasdaq Debut Eighteen Years in the Making
SpaceX, the private rocket company founded by Elon Musk in 2008 with the singular ambition of making humanity a multiplanetary species, began trading on the Nasdaq on June 12 under the ticker SPCE. The initial public offering of $135 per share already made it the largest IPO in U.S. history, raising $47.5 billion and pricing well above the $100-to-$115 range the underwriters had initially marketed. One week later, that price already looks conservative. By the close of trading on Friday, June 19, SpaceX shares were changing hands at $165.80, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $2.1 trillion and making it the fifth most valuable publicly traded company in the world, behind only Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Saudi Aramco.
The scope of the debut is difficult to overstate. The previous record for a U.S. IPO belonged to Alibaba Group, which raised $25 billion in its 2014 listing. SpaceX blew past that figure by nearly double and did so in an environment where IPO activity had been sluggish for two years. The offering was oversubscribed by 12-to-1, according to sources familiar with the process, with institutional investors clamoring for an allocation that ultimately eluded most of them.
"SpaceX is the most consequential aerospace company since Lockheed Martin's founding in 1912, and its IPO is the most anticipated since Facebook went public in 2012," said Anita George, a partner at PitchBook who covers space and defense technology. "The difference is that SpaceX is a profitable, cash-generating business with a clear growth trajectory. Facebook's early days were full of mobile monetization questions. Nobody is asking whether SpaceX can make money."
The Starlink Machine
The primary engine behind the public's enthusiasm is Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet constellation that now comprises more than 8,500 operational satellites in low-Earth orbit. Starlink generated an estimated $18.3 billion in revenue in 2025, up from $11.4 billion in 2024, and is projected to exceed $28 billion in 2026 as the service expands into densely populated markets across Asia and Africa. Starlink now has more than 6.2 million active subscribers worldwide, a figure that has doubled in less than 18 months.
The S-1 filing revealed financial metrics that are rare for a pre-IPO company. SpaceX reported $32.7 billion in total revenue for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2025, with net income of $5.4 billion. The launch services division, which includes the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and the fully reusable Starship, contributed $11.9 billion, while government contracts, primarily with the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA, accounted for the remainder. The company's gross margin stood at 58 percent, a figure that would be the envy of most software companies, let alone a hardware-intensive aerospace manufacturer.
"Every quarter that Starlink adds subscribers, the marginal cost of serving them approaches zero because the satellite infrastructure is already in orbit," explained Dr. John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. "That is the kind of operating leverage that drives long-term shareholder value. SpaceX is not just a rocket company. It is a vertically integrated telecommunications infrastructure provider with a defensible moat that no competitor can replicate in less than a decade."
The Retail Wave That Baffled the Algorithms
What distinguished the SpaceX IPO from its predecessors was the extraordinary participation of retail investors. Trading platforms including Robinhood, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and Interactive Brokers reported that SpaceX was the most-requested ticker in their history, exceeding even the GameStop frenzy of 2021 in terms of total order volume. Robinhood alone processed more than 2.3 million buy orders for SpaceX stock on the first day of trading, overwhelming its order-routing systems and forcing the platform to briefly halt new position openings.
The retail surge created a phenomenon that traders have begun calling the "SpaceX premium." The stock's opening trade on June 12 was executed at $148.50, a full $13.50 above the IPO price, and it never looked back. Short sellers who had bet that the stock would succumb to IPO-pop gravity, in which newly public companies often give back their first-day gains, were punished severely. According to data from S3 Partners, short sellers had accumulated $3.2 billion in SpaceX short positions ahead of the listing, betting that the valuation was stretched. As of June 19, those short positions had incurred mark-to-market losses of approximately $720 million.
"We have never seen retail behavior like this for a large-cap IPO," said Matthew Kennedy, senior IPO market strategist at Renaissance Capital. "Usually the institutional investors get the allocation, the stock pops, and retail buys the dip weeks later. Here retail said, 'We don't care about the allocation. We will buy it in the open market at whatever price it takes.' It is a paradigm shift in how IPOs behave."
Musk's Payday and the Governance Question
The IPO has transformed Elon Musk's personal fortune into something approaching the national GDP of a medium-sized country. Musk held 42 percent of SpaceX pre-IPO through a combination of direct ownership and his controlling interest in the SpaceX Trust. At the current market capitalization, his stake is worth approximately $882 billion, making him, by a wide margin, the wealthiest individual in human history. That figure does not account for his holdings in Tesla, which itself has a market cap of $780 billion, or in xAI, his artificial intelligence venture, which was valued at $55 billion in its most recent funding round.
The concentration of voting power has raised governance concerns among some institutional investors. SpaceX's post-IPO capital structure includes Class B shares that carry ten votes per share, all of which are held by Musk and a small group of early investors. That structure gives Musk effective control over the company's board and strategic direction even as public shareholders own 48 percent of the economic interest. In the S-1, SpaceX acknowledged this risk explicitly: "Mr. Musk's concentrated control over the company's affairs may discourage or prevent transactions that are in the best interests of other stockholders."
"Dual-class structures are common in founder-led technology companies, but SpaceX's version is unusually restrictive," noted Charles Elson, a corporate governance expert and professor at the University of Delaware. "The standard argument is that founders need control to execute a long-term vision without quarterly earnings pressure. But when one individual controls an enterprise worth $2 trillion, the lack of accountability becomes a systemic risk, not just a shareholder concern."
The Mars Dividend
For all the attention on Starlink's financial performance, the real story behind the SpaceX valuation is the Mars mission timeline. Musk has stated publicly that the company's first uncrewed Starship landing on Mars is targeted for 2028, with the first human landing planned for 2030. In the IPO prospectus, the company described interplanetary transportation as "the ultimate growth market" and disclosed that it has already spent $4.7 billion on Mars mission infrastructure, including the development of orbital refueling technology, planetary entry systems, and surface habitat designs.
Analysts are divided on whether the Mars timeline is realistic. SpaceX has made extraordinary progress with Starship, conducting nine full-scale test flights in 2025 alone and achieving orbital refueling on the fifth attempt. But the engineering challenges that remain, including long-duration life support, radiation shielding, and the ability to manufacture fuel on the Martian surface, are formidable. NASA's Perseverance rover has been testing oxygen production from the Martian atmosphere through its MOXIE instrument, but scaling that technology to support human missions is still in the conceptual phase.
"The market is pricing in a Mars landing as a high-probability event within this decade," said Dr. Laura Forczyk, a space industry analyst and founder of Astralytical. "If SpaceX achieves that, the stock could double or triple from here. If the timeline slips to the 2040s, the valuation will compress significantly. This is a binary bet on the most ambitious engineering program in history, and the market is currently leaning toward the optimistic outcome."
What the Analysts Are Saying Now
Wall Street has scrambled to produce coverage since the stock began trading, and the early consensus is bullish. Morgan Stanley initiated coverage with an overweight rating and a price target of $200, citing Starlink's subscription growth trajectory and the potential for Starship to capture a significant share of the global launch market. Goldman Sachs set a price target of $195, emphasizing SpaceX's government contracts and the strategic advantage of vertical integration in the emerging space economy.
Not everyone is convinced. The most bearish call came from Morningstar analyst Nicolas Owens, who assigned a fair value of $100 per share, arguing that the Mars narrative is obscuring fundamental risks. "SpaceX is an extraordinarily capable company, but the valuation implies that Starlink will achieve near-monopoly status in global satellite broadband and that Starship will reduce launch costs by an order of magnitude within five years," Owens wrote in his initiation note. "Both are possible, but the probability that both happen simultaneously is not reflected in the current price."
The next major catalyst for the stock is the July 11 scheduled launch of Starship Flight 11, which will attempt the vehicle's first crewed test with a SpaceX engineering team on board. If successful, it would be the first time a Starship has carried humans, a milestone that would validate the safety systems that underpin the Mars program and almost certainly send the stock to new highs.
